My Thai Vegan Cafe

My thoughts on veggie meat. I dont know why it exists. If you're a vegetarian, why would you want to eat something that is supposed to mimic the thing that you don't eat? Plus, you're in denial if you think it actually tastes that good. The veggie meat at My Thai Vegan Cafe is good, but it would never knock my socks off. I like their Thai flavors regardless though. This time, I got Tom Yum Soup (with faux chicken) and Red Curry (also with faux chicken). Their Tom Yum is sweeter than most and there's lots of crunchy veggies, which I love.

Watch What You Eat: Jiro Dreams of Sushi

"A THRILLING and BEAUTIFUL portrait of a family and the most thorough, concise and MADDENINGLY DELICIOUS looking explanation of the all too frequently misunderstood world of sushi." -Anthony Bourdain

Comes out April 6th in Boston. I'm there!

Banh Mi March Madness

Here's my ranking of Boston banh mi's that I've tried, tournament style, in honor of NCAA basketball.

No upsets here, folks. New Saigon pulls of the easy victory with its cruncy, spicy, clean banh mi. It was a close battle between Mei Sum and 163, but Mei Sum prevails, taking second place. Sub City never had a chance, landing in last place.

Delux Cafe

If you haven't tried Delux Cafe in Boston, get there now.  Completely unassuming, it looks like a total dive from the outside, but so charming once you get inside. I love the dark, mysterious atmosphere. The food is comfort food done right. I ordered bean and cheese quesadillas (they were out of the jerk chicken tacos that I was drooling over!). The quesadillas, not exactly a risky choice, were delicious regardless. I also got the sticky toffee chocolate cake, the only dessert on the menu. I love that there's only one dessert. Gotta have confidence to pull that off. And yes, it was amazing. I've never had sticky toffee pudding before, but I want it now. That toffee flavor is addictive. My only complaint was that there wasn't enough of the cake :( Delux Cafe no doubt is one of my favorite places in Boston. If I didn't write a food blog, I might just go there for every meal.

Pho Pasteur

What the pho! Its kind of sad that I just discovered pho, living so close to chinatown for the past 4 years. I'll try not to make too many pho jokes during this post. Anyways, I had an after work pick-me-up meal from Pho Pasteur a couple days ago. I got Chicken Curry Vermicelli, better known as Number 29. The broth was spicy, the veggies were crisp, and chicken was flavorful. Although I've only eaten it a couple times, pho is one of those homey dishes that just makes you happy by eating it. I'm still working on my pho-eating technique, so I'll be back soon, pho sho.

Morse Fish Company

After a 24 hours of starvation thanks to my job, I made the trip to Morse Fish Company for dinner. I got fried scallops, but I was kind of disappointed. I thought the scallops got lost in the fried crust. I think I'll take my scallops seared from now on. I don't know if I really like fried food all that much. It can be heavy and greasy, not always, but I feel that most of the time it just has that "fried" taste. Plus I can just feel my coronaries dying with every bite I take. The fried scallops definitely had that fast food fried kind for flavor that you expect from somewhere like KFC. I thought the dish needed more seasoning and spice. I might be back to buy some fresh fish to cook at home, otherwise on to the next!

Fried clams and calamari, stolen from Yelp because I never remember my camera :(

Metropolis Cafe- Brunch

This will be a short one about Metropolis Cafe. No pictures to share because I forgot my camera and my co-diners were very uncooperative. I got the southern style grits, which was basically a plate of sides: grits, 2 over easy eggs, chorizo, and toast. I have to say I was pretty nervous ordering grits at a restaurant not in the south but I actually enjoyed them thoroughly. Grits are one of those foods that once you've tried the best, nothing can compare (Low Country Backyard in Hilton Head comes to mind). I'm wondering, should that change what I order when I go out to eat? I'm usually more likely to order a dish that I've had and loved before rather than try something new, which I think is a flawed approach to eating. Its something I'm trying to change. Why try to relive a past experience when there's so much out there to try?

Szechuan Food at Thailand Cafe (Wait What?)

Yes, I live about 5 blocks from Chinatown in Boston. Yet, for some reason I dragged my friend all the way to Central Square to eat at a place called Thailand Cafe. Oddly enough, the actual Thai food is supposed to be terrible, but we were going for the Szechuan menu. We ordered Sichuan Pork Wontons with Chili Vinaigrette for appetizer. Other than the fact that they came out after the entrees, they were my favorite part of my meal. They were bite size wontons that were spicy with a hint of sweetness, and pretty much taking a bath in the vinaigrette, which was basically hot oil. Does that only sound good to me? We also got Chong Tsing Dry Hot Chicken and Peking Braised Eggplant. The Chicken entree was the closest I've come to Three Pepper Chicken, but it still didn't even come close. The eggplant was excellent. This place reminded me of some Philly faves (namely Han Dynasty and Szechuan Tasty House) and I'm glad I made the trip. I think I might be back, with a bigger group next time.

Dry Hot Chicken (its getting hot in here!)
